Kentucky/LSU Preview & Prediction

LSU at #16 Kentucky (-2.5) | 7:30 p.m. ET | TV: SEC Network

Kentucky is 4-1 against the spread in 2021. Under head coach Ed Orgeron, LSU is 7-0 against the spread in road games as the underdog and 5-2 straight up. Something’s gotta give Saturday night.

Are the Wildcats poised for a let down game after their monumental victory over Florida last week? Maybe if it were a noon game. Maybe if it weren’t a sold-out crowd, maybe if it were a team like Tennessee or Mississippi State...but just think about it. This is a team that came into the season ranked and is less than two years removed from winning the national championship. The name and logo on the uniforms/helmets is enough to motivate Kentucky players.

And I have no doubt Kroger Field will be rocking. The fans are still riding high from that Florida win and know that they were definitely responsible for part of the eight(!) false starts last week against the Gators. It should be an awesome atmosphere.

Kentucky’s defense has been stout, only allowing five plays of 20 yards or more from the line of scrimmage this season, and zero plays over 30 yards. LSU’s offense relies on long pass plays (of 20+ yards), which have accounted for more than half of the Tigers’ touchdowns in 2021.

If the Cats can keep on this trajectory and limit LSU’s big play ability, it’s going to be really hard for the Tigers to find points, especially in the endzone.

I expect Kentucky to be able to control the line of scrimmage and dominate time of possession by doing what its offense does best: running the damn ball. As long as the Cats don’t get behind in the turnover margin, I like their chances.

The game should be close, but I expect UK to pull away by the end and win by six or seven points as it has in its last three SEC contests. Prediction: Kentucky 23, LSU 17. GO CATS!
